Last night I attended – along with 650 others – The Heritage Foundation’s Town Hall to Defund ObamaCare. The two key speakers were former Senator Jim Demint who is now President of the Foundation, and Rafael Cruz, who is Texas Senator Ted Cruz’ father.
I knew the hired OFA protesters would be there. They’ve been hired by the formerly-ACORN group to demonstrate at all the Heritage’s Town Hall meetings around the country. They hurled insults to those of us driving into the hotel’s parking lot but many Columbus police were there to make sure the demonstrators stayed in a specific area and to keep them under control.
Jim Demint spoke about the political process on how the ObamaScare bill can be defunded without shutting down the government. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) have initiated an online petition that citizens can sign to show their politicians that they don’t want the extremely hazardous bill funded. You can sign it here plus check to see how your Senator or Representative stands in their support or non support of ObamaScare.
The highlight for me was Rafael’s speech. I had read that he was a very dynamic speaker, and he truly is. He was a young man when Batista, Cuba’s dictator, was overthrown in 1959 by Fidel Castro. I remember when I was in the 8th grade, one of my teachers spent Christmas vacation sunning on a beach in Cuba. It used to be a beautiful go-to place before the revolution.
Rafael told us what it was like as Castro turned the country to Socialism. There are many similarities to what Obama is doing to America now as he implements his “transformational” change. (must watch Rafael’s speech to Freedom Works) The speech he gave to us was similar to the Freedom Works speech but he covered more of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. It was truly moving to hear an immigrant’s perspective on the freedoms we had and are losing to Obama’s socialism. I fear that too many younger people have never studied enough history to understand what dictators like Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Lenin and Castro did to their people, although Gaddafi and Assad come close. Perhaps it’s those 4th grade memories of crawling under my desk for the bomb drills in case the Soviet Union attacked us, that have caused me to value my freedom more and be so determined to not lose it.
Mr Cruz received many standing ovations, including after a prayer. I confess, there were a number of times his speech brought tears to my eyes as I considered the America I grew up in versus the America that’s left for my granddaughters.
