Time for End-Year Look at NICS Background Checks

The New Year is here … FINALLY! It’s time to review year-end results. The media will be doing a lot of this “Year In Review“. For me, I updated the year-end results of FBI NICS Background Checks. The two charts in the far right column of this blog show the most recent results for both the National and Ohio background checks.

There are two other graphs that I’ve updated from last year-end. Both these graphs compare TOTAL YEAR results for National and Ohio. Both charts show the effect of Obama’s years in office. There was an upward swing when he took office because he was known to be anti-gun, and recently said the one goal he wasn’t able to achieve was to take guns away from people. Time will tell whether the upswings continue under a President Trump.

In Ohio, the FBI did 480,144 more checks for 2016 than they did in 2009!

As it has been said, Obama has been the BEST gun salesman in history.

In Ohio, 1 in 16 people are licensed to carry a handgun!

Buckeye Firearms Association just reported on the Ohio Attorney General’s release of Concealed Handgun Licenses (CHL) issued for the 2nd Qtr.

RESULTS:

  • The 2nd Qtr showed a 65% increase over prior year.
  • There are 550,000 valid Ohio CHL’s.
  • Sheriffs issued almost 20 CHLs per hour.
  • Sheriffs issued over 650 CHLs per week.
  • If in a group of 16 people, odds are that 1 person has a CHL.

As the Buckeye Firearms article indicates, Sheriffs have been swamped with requests. The process to get a CHL is to take an 8-hour training/shooting class from an accredited instructor. (I took my training at Blackwing Shooting Center.) Once you have the certificate, you schedule an appointment with your local sheriff or the sheriff of a contingent county. You complete a background questionnaire, have an ID photo taken and are fingerprinted. The sheriff sends all the info for main processing in Columbus/Cincinnati where a thorough FBI background check is conducted. Once completed, they send your license to you which is similar in appearance to a driver’s license with your photo. It was about 7 weeks from the time I took the class until I received the license, but the Christmas/New Year holidays were in the middle so that likely added time.

Today it was announced there is a Bill to be presented that would alter the number of gun-free zones. Read about the proposed bill here.

Remember how the East Coast media freaked out when they learned Ohio was an open-carry State and they were afraid of “mass shootings” during the Republican Convention? Then nothing happened! 🙂

Record NCIS Background Checks for January

Obama’s not going to be happy. January NCIS Background Checks hit another monthly record. With 2,545,802 checks for the month, it was the highest January number since checks began in 1998. The 2nd highest January was in 2013 – right after Obama was elected for a second term.

Ohio’s number of background checks mirrored the National growth. Ohio’s January number of 76,218 was a 60% increase over 2015.

A number of Sheriff’s – including 3 in Ohio – have recommended citizens get a gun and a concealed carry license to protect themselves since it may take too long for law enforcement to get there. The massacres in San Bernardino were over in only 5 minutes! As someone said, “I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy!”

Practice, Practice, Practice!

I hadn’t been to the shooting range for 3 weeks so decided I’d better practice. Besides it was a dreary afternoon so might as well spend it doing something fun. I practiced putting into play some new things I learned during the 8-hour CCW class. Changed my stance to the defense mode and kept both eyes open. Our instructor told us to aim for center mass (versus the bullseye as in target shooting) and to line up the end of the gun to the center mass area with BOTH eyes. This allows you to keep peripheral vision during a stress event.

I continue to be amazed at the number of “senior” women who are learning how to shoot. Both my “Beginner’s Handgun” and “Concealed Carry” classes (which were full) had half the class with women over 60. It’s a sign of the times!!

Ohio NCIS Background Checks Up 20% vs 2014

EDIT: See Year-End Update Article

In October, I posted info on the increase of NCIS Background Checks performed for people purchasing guns. The number of requests has increased substantially since Obama became President, due to his well-known goal of eliminating guns, thus violating Americans’ 2nd Amendment rights. Every time he brings up the topic of gun control, sales of guns increase. Just recently, it was published that gun sales on Black Friday shopping day had the most background checks EVER for a single day. (The number of background checks do not indicate the number of guns sold since multiple guns could be purchased under one background search.)

I’ve updated the three charts to include Oct-Nov data now available on FBI.gov. The upward trend continues.

Glock 19 Gen 4Buckeye Firearms just posted an article that some Ohio Sheriffs are suggesting that citizens with Concealed Carry Licenses (CCL) carry their guns with them. They’re also recommending that gun owners obtain a CCL in case they need to protect themselves. Link to article.

Background checks increase since Obama

EDIT: See Year-End Update Article

Yesterday we had another shooting in a gun-free zone. Naturally Obama immediately called for more gun control laws. During his seven years in office, every time he does this, gun sales increase. The gun industry has named him their Top Salesman. Requests for NCIS background checks has increased substantially since Obama took office. (The number of background checks does not equate to number of firearms sold).

I compiled these charts from the data available at FBI.gov. The following chart shows National background checks by year since 1999. Red equals Obama’s tenure.

The following chart shows National background checks for YTD for 2015 vs 2014. The total for 2014 was 15,251,997 versus 15,607,587 in 2015 for a 2% increase.
